Tomato Sambar/Thakkali Sambar - recipe with stepwise pictures. It is usually made as a sidedish for tiffin recipes such as idli/dosa/pongal. We make this whenever we don't have veggies in stock. The method is same as we make for usual sambar, but we make this tomato sambar with Masoor dal. You can use toor dal, or both dals. This recipe can be made quickly and it is also tasty. Tomato Sambar/Thakkali Sambar- Recipe with Stepwise Pictures
Ingredients:
Tomatoes - 2
Onion - 1
Masoor dal/Toor dal - 1/2 cup
Tamarind - lemon sized
Sambar powder - 2 tsp
Green chilli - 1
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
To Temper:
Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard - 2 pinches
Red chilli - 2
Garlic - 2 crushed with skin
Asafoetida - 2 pinches
Method:
With Stepwise Pictures:
Thinly slice the onion and tomatoes, slit the green chilli
Wash the dal well in running water
In a pressure cooker add the dal, tomatoes, onions, green chilli, turmeric powder, salt .
Add water and cook for 6 whistles
Once it is cooked, mash it well
Add sambar powder , tamarind extract,1/2 cup water, mix well and allow it to boil
In another kadai, temper the items given under 'to temper'
Add it to the boiling sambar, close with a lid and switch off the flame
Serve hot sambar with idli/dosa/pongal
